This guide is for visitors and sightseers searching for things to do in Koh Larn Island. You will find plenty of white sandy beaches and water-based sporty activities.
If you are not too comfortable in sea water, you can try the mountain shooting range at Koh Larn. You might also prefer hillside trekking or an inland bicycle tour.
No matter what your favorite island activity is, time your day trip well. You might see a crowd of movie makers filming the latest Asian motion picture. They often use the remote tropical beaches off Pattaya.
Koh Larn hotels, guesthouses, and resorts are on the east of the island. They are close to Naban village and face towards Pattaya and Jomtien.
You will find resorts with air-condition and hot water. But, you should plan for quiet evenings with very little night time entertainment.
Typical weekday room rates for Koh Larn hotels start around 1,000 Thai baht per night in low season. For that price, most of the rooms will have ocean views.
The lush greenery at Koh Larn Island is mountainous vegetation on its interior. There are further outcrops dotted around its periphery.
Koh Larn is not the official Monkey Island in Pattaya. Even so, natural wildlife and Samae monkeys inhabit the inland jungle areas. Transportation through the inland terrain is by motorcycle along narrow roadways.
Koh Larn accommodation is not over-developed with villas or holiday hotels. But, there are a few resorts and homely overnight cheap bungalows available. Take a relaxing massage or enjoy the ‘freshly’ caught sea food and local Thai cuisine.
Tawaen pier is to the west of the most popular and famous Koh Larn beach. There is an exuberance of tempting places to eat and places to relax on the white sand.
Tawaen golden sands stretch for more than 700 meters at the center of the north face. It is one of the largest beaches on the island.
Be aware of intrusive jet skis and powerful speed boats zipping in and out of this popular bay. Sadly, there have been accidents! Those who venture into the water also need to be alert. Watch out for big yellow inflatable banana boat rides swirling around close to the beach.
Samae Beach is not as long as Ta Waen. But it does give you an opportunity to try other sedate water activities. You can go snorkeling and rock-pooling on the south west of the island. The viewpoint at Khao Nom offers splendid panoramic scenic views of the coral island.
Tien Beach extends 500 meters along the western edge of Koh Larn Island. It offers a good selection massage and recreational activities at the water’s edge. There are banana rides, jet-ski rentals, snorkel swimming, and others. You can also stay overnight here at one of the bungalows or pitched tents during high season.
Nual Beach in the south could be the best place for Koh Larn hotel accommodation. You also get some private bathing facilities. Sailing, scuba diving, and snorkelling is very popular in this sheltered bay. You are likely to find fringing corals and small tropical fish families. Monkeys frequent the far end of the crescent-shaped bay. They usually make an appearance if you provide them with some ‘in-season’ fruits.
Sang Wan Beach stretches for 150 meters on the north west tip. It is to the side of Tawaen, but very different in many ways. Even so, they both share the same golden sands and clear blue sea.
Thong Lang is a modest sized inlet close to the pier at Nabaan and located to the south of Tawaen. Its tranquil beaches and shallow water make it ideal for those looking to get away from it all.
Tayaiy Beach is a tiny sandy bay situated at the north eastern tip of Koh Larn beach peninsula. It is one of the nearest sandy inlets to visit. It is also the best place to view, and photograph, Pattaya bay from the superb vantage point on Koh Larn Island.
You can buy a half or full day package trip from a tour agency. That means you will get a tour guide to take you around some of the best beaches on Larn Island.
All the beachfronts share similar beautiful scenery views and white powdered sand. Yet, renting a motorbike at the pier means you can find other things to do in Koh Larn.
Other places of interest include the 200 meter hill climb to the Wat. Visit the Buddhist Shrine at the summit surrounded by unspoiled lush vegetation.
If you are wondering what interesting pursuits you can do when you get to Koh Larn. Touring the four kilometer long by two km wide land mass is sometimes a challenge.
But you have several options for getting around Koh Larn. Trekking to the resort areas off the beaten track gets you away from the water sport activities.
There are motorbike taxis and pickup-style taxi buses (songthaews) located at the pier. They will take you where you choose to visit. Or, you can rent a modern motorcycle in Naban village for around 300 baht per day.
What if you are super adventurous and plan to stay on Larn Island for a few days? Be sure to print out the large map of Koh Larn Island. If you choose to bring your own bike on the public ferry there may be an extra fee.
